Allergies And Deodorant: What To Look Out For

People use deodorant to prevent themselves from smelling like body odor. They wear it under their arms and, when they sweat, the sweat mixes with the deodorant to produce a much more pleasant odor.

However, what happens if you are allergic to the very deodorant that you are using to help you smell better? Are you forever doomed to reek of body odor simply because you suffer from an allergy to deodorant? The answer is no, there are other things you can do to smell better besides wearing deodorant. But how do you know if you are truly allergic to deodorant?

Signs Of An Allergic Reaction To Deodorant

If you're not sure if you are allergic to deodorant, there are certain signs that you can look out for. For instance, if, after applying the deodorant, you notice a rash of any kind, or a series of red and inflamed bumps, or anything else out of the ordinary, it's recommended that you stop using the deodorant immediately.

However, just because you have a reaction to deodorant doesn't necessarily mean that you're allergic to it. It could mean that you're simply having a bad reaction to that particular brand. Before you stop using deodorant altogether, because you think you're allergic to it, you should probably try just switching brands. Try several different brands. If, after all that, you still exhibit signs of an allergy to deodorant, that's when you should give up deodorant altogether.

Alternatives To Deodorant

If you feel that you are, in fact, allergic to deodorant, try using other things under your arms to keep you from smelling like you just got done running a marathon. For example, try putting baby powder, or talc, under your arms. This will keep you smelling fresh and will also keep you from sweating excessively. It may not be as effective as deodorant so you should probably carry some with you in case you have to add some more during the day.

See An Allergist

If you're still not sure whether or not you're allergic to deodorant, consult an allergist. An allergist can test you to see what you are really allergic to. You never know, it could be the soap you're using and not the deodorant at all that's causing your reactions. Only by seeing an allergist and getting tested can you truly determine if you are allergic to deodorant or not.

It should be noted, however, that an allergy to deodorant is not the end of the world. It simply means you have to find alternatives to help you stay fresh all day long. That way, you can still smell great no matter how much you sweat.
